David Hatcher
Cello / Viola da gamba
David Hatcher
studied viola da gamba with Charles Medlam and Recorder
with Philip Thorby at Trinity College of Music, London. After
an initial period based in England during which time he
performed with his own ensemble Harmonie Universelle and as a
guest with The New London Consort and Fretwork he moved to
Japan in 1987 where he was to remain for the next nine years.
His recordings include a series of CDs with Evelyn Tubb,
Chelys, Sprezzatura, and the Japanese ensembles Ensemble
Ecclesia and the Bach Collegium of Japan. He has also appeared
on NHK (Japanese national television) in a highly successful
dramatised historical documentary as an eighteenth century
Dutch musician, and his recordings with Anthony Rooley’s
Consort of Musicke, Evelyn Tubb and Bach Collegium of Japan are
regularly broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
David now lives in Leominster on the
Welsh Marches, and in addition to his performances in the UK he
regularly returns to Japan to play and record. He is in great
demand as an accompanist, and has performed with singers Emma
Kirkby, Evelyn Tubb, Catherine Bott and Ian Partridge, and
violinist Catherine Mackintosh.
