Nowadays we regularly encounter masterful
works from Bach's pen in the concert hall - the B minor mass,
the passions, the concertos - but there is much of his music
which is less frequently performed.
In the opening concert of the Bach
weekend, we hear two early cantatas both of which feature the
distinctive sound of pairs of recorders. Placing Bach's music
in context, we include composers whose works Bach studied -
Albinoni, Corelli and Couperin - and a cantata by Buxtehude
whom Bach travelled 200 miles - allegedly on foot - to hear.
