About the music
Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel was
highly regarded by Bach - the song ‘Bist du bei mir’
was copied into Anna Magdalena’s music book, and Wilhelm
Friedmann studied his suite in G minor. Stölzel’s
cantatas and oratorios are becoming more well known, but his
instrumental music is still unjustly neglected. His extravagant
Concerto pits choirs of trumpets, oboes and strings against
eachother in vibrant, evenergetic music.
Telemann needs
no introduction; but his Tafelmusik suite in B flat surely
ranks as some of the most charming music he wrote. Characterful
dances are mixed with descriptive movements - such as Bergeries
and Postillons - in this multi-faceted suite scored for oboes
and strings.
Georg Böhm was probably Bach’s teacher when he
spent two years in Lüneburg as a teenager. The two
composers kept in touch, and like Stölzel’s, Böhm’s
music was played in the Bach household. The suite in D has come
down to us as harpsichord music but was probably an arrangement
of an orchestral piece.
Vivaldi’s
A minor concerto was also highly prized by Bach - so much so
that he arrangeed it for organ. And we conclude with the
familiar Third Orchestral Suite, reuniting all three choirs of
instruments.
